Dissociative Personality Disorder (DID) is the name the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders-IV-Text Version (DSM-IV-TR) uses for the disorder previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). Dissociative disorders are a heterogeneous pair of disorders defined in the DSM-IV-TR that all involve some form of identification loss (APA, 2000). The concept of a persona describes, in fairly general terms, a feeling of integration regarding the way one particular feels, considers behaves. Even though a single individuality can have sufficient different aspects to it, the concept of personality corelates a sense of oneness to the personal. DID is actually a dissociative disorder in which the specific has several totally independent and distinctive personalities, each determining the attitudes and behavior in the person at that time that it is prominent. DID is recognized as one of the more critical of all the psychiatric disorders classified by the DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000).

Prior to toll free persons suffering from DID had been likely regarded as being possessed (APA, 2000). The American psychiatrist Benjamin Hurry provided a clinical information of PERFORMED (Kluft, 1996) and Freud and Bleuer both identified the pathology although equally believed that to have different etiologies (Kluft, 1996). In 1980, the DSM-III acknowledged Multiple Individuality Disorder (APA, 1980) and naturally public awareness of the disorder came about through a series of well-known books in people purporting to obtain DID and from Showmanship films.

In line with the current classification criteria include the presence of at least two unique personalities, for least two of the individuality recurrently take control control of the person’s behavior, a great inability in the person to recall crucial personal information that may be too considerable to be the result of ordinary forgetfulness, and the symptoms are not due to substance use/abuse or to a medical condition (e. g., dementia).

The primary character (the one that is the unique personality) is often not aware of the existence of some other personalities (Ross, 2006). In fact the amnestic component of DO is crucial for the diagnosis (APA, 2000). The shift from a single personality for the other can often be sudden and dramatic. During each individuality state the person is generally unaware of the different personalities or the events happening when these other personalities were dominant (Kluft, 1996). However , in some cases more than one personalities is aware of the others or certain aspects of the others; however , this is seldom the case with all the primary individuality (Kluft, 1991). In the vintage cases every personality possesses its own name, personality, history, and memories. The secondary personas are often childlike, disparate through the primary persona, or might be a different sexuality and age from the person with the disorder (Ross, 2006).

The prevalence of PERFORMED is hotly debated with one serious believing it is quite rare and the other assuming it is tremendously underdiagnosed (Gleaves, May, Carden, 2001). The more prefered studies indicate that 0. 5 to three percent of psychiatric medical center admissions meet the diagnostic criteria
