“Qualitative studies, particularly ethnographic research, can explain in great fine detail the detailed aspects of African-American family lifestyle and the parental activities and behaviors which may account for youth outcomes” (Burton, Allison, Obeidallah, 1996; Jarrett, 1995).

The results of the study indicated that the existence of uncles in the lives of African-American male youngsters identified as at risk, fostered powerful transitions into young adulthood, positive teenage development, as well as the informal sociable controls that served to hold youth physical violence and delinquency in check.
