In Raymond Carvers short story A Small, A valuable thing, the Baker’s helplessness is caused by his apparent class status through an unknown financial stability, resulting in a sense of seclusion and isolation. The baker resolves his sense of helplessness if he realizes that classes your unknown through his connection with Ann and Howard.
