Psychoanalysis and the Self: Sigmund Freud’s Impact in nineteenth Century Idea and Science

Nineteenth century thinking was characterized by the emergence of two innovative ideologies that influenced the course of history for the succeeding centuries: Karl Marx’s conflict theory and Sigmund Freud’s technique of psychoanalysis in psychology. Marx’s analysis with the political economic climate of the capitalist system resulted in the development of the Socialist activity. Freud’s psychoanalytical theory, meanwhile, emphasized the pursuit for self-knowledge and individuality as the key to personal development.

This paper offers focus on the life of Sigmund Freud, for the reason that of his significant contribution towards developing the kind of modern day society common in European societies – that is, a great individualist society, wherein the pursuit of self-knowledge led to sociable and personal (individual) progress.

Born in the Czech Republic in 1856, Sigmund Freud had led the life of a the case scientist and academician. Educated at Vienna University, Freud had earlier planned to pursue a profession as a lawyer, although this individual decided to go after medicine rather (also for Vienna University) in 1873. As a medical student, he expressed desire for the study of natural sciences, going through research work upon human biology, particularly nerve research, and remained for six years at the School to obtain his medical degree (the further three years was spent on conducting extended nerve research work). After obtaining his medical degree, Freud practiced in the General Medical center of Vienna. In 1885, he kept his post as a doctor in the medical center to accept work as a lecturer in Vienna University. It had been in this year that Freud went to Paris, france to be below Jean Charcot’s guidance in pursuing his studies in neurology. Below Charcot, he experienced working on nervous conditions, particularly foreboding (Microsoft Encarta 2002).

A year after he finished his studies under Charcot in Paris, Freud began chasing and exploring the nature and development of health issues such as foreboding and the approach to hypnotherapy to ease the negative effects of foreboding on the specific. It was in 1891 that Freud surely could publish his years of analysis on hysteria and hypnotherapy, and five years after, he recognized his findings under the larger term, “psychoanalysis. “

Psychoanalysis, as a field of research in mindset, provides a new avenue for those to understanding the self inside the context of the individual’s personal history – everything that problems his/her life as a child towards his/her development as an adult. Two important concepts control Freud’s psychoanalytic theory: the psyche as well as the unconscious. The Psyche is known as the spirit of the individual. In psychoanalysis, the psyche “is the mental apparatus since it is defined in contrast to the body or perhaps soma” (Thurschwell, 2000: 4). The Subconscious, meanwhile, is definitely the “storehouse of instinctual wants and needs… subconscious is… The fantastic waste-paper holder of the head – the trash that never gets taken out” (4). Moreover, in the conceptualization of the unconscious, Freud also explains the fact that unconscious builds up prior to the development of consciousness – a phenomenon that psychoanalysis synonymously co-workers with the exploration of the true mother nature of the individual, where a lot more primarily based about ‘instinctive wants and needs. ‘

He additional develops his study of psychoanalysis simply by identifying significant elements and theses that became the foundation for this paradigm. Freud posits that “unlearned biological instincts influence just how individuals believe, feel, and behave” (Santrock, 2000: 9). By professing this, psychoanalysis looks into the private history of the individual to identify how people respond the way they do; ultimately, just how individuals develop to become what exactly they are as adults was affected by activities they had since a child. Ultimately, psychoanalysis looks into the conflict that emerges inside the individual, while s/he tries to reconcile his/her social realities against his or her biological desires and needs.

Using the assertions discussed previously mentioned, Freud looks into how psychoanalysis is operationalized through a research of the illness, hysteria. Relating to Levine (1999), psychoanalysis seeks to arrive at the following “truths” concerning being human: (1) only the psychoanalytic method of interpretation and treatment may yield or mediate pertaining to the patient the right insight into the unconscious reasons for his neuroses and (2) the
