The enjoy begins within an Athenian palace just before the wedding ceremony of Theseus, Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, “Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour as well as Draws on apace” (I: My spouse and i: I) Hippolyta is the popular Queen from the Amazons who has been overcome and now weds the Fight it out. Perhaps because of the legends linked to the matriarchal world of the Amazons, Shakespeare shows Hippolyta like a woman conquered, indicating that the Queen of the Amazons must certainly be conquered just before accepting a man in matrimony. It is assumed that Theseus and Hippolyta met in combat, and so he claims her that although this individual wooed her in fight with his blade, they will wed “with pomp, with success, and with reveling” (I: I: 19).
The wedding can be interrupted when an Athenian dad, Egeus, comes begging to Theseus intended for help relating to his child, Hermia. Egeus has bequeathed Hermia to Demetrius, nevertheless , she refuses to marry him because she is in love with one more young man, Lysander. Angry that his girl is disobeying him, Egeus demands which the law discipline Hermia unless she complies with his instructions. Egeus is also angry with Lysander, “With cunning hast thou filched my little girl’s heart, as well as Turned her obedience, which is due to me personally, / to stubborn harshness” (I: My spouse and i: 36-38). Following listening to equally Egeus and Hermia to speak their protection, Theseus speaks directly to Hermia, telling her “Either to die the death or to abjure as well as Forever the society of men” (I: I: 65-66). Theseus sides with Egeus and states his request as Athenian law and basically offers Hermia three choices. The lady can marry Demetrius, perish, or enter into a convent. In other words, Hermia could be a very good girl and obey her father’s would like even on the price of her very own happiness throughout her existence, or forget marriage totally and become a nun, or forget life altogether and stay sentenced to death. Nevertheless , in not one of the choices is she allowed, even by a price, to follow along with her desires except with the price of death. The girl with not allowed to marry Lysander at any costs or effects, such as being disinherited simply by her dad
