The narrator here is in clear turmoil with the benefit system of the white males. He is a Native American Indian that is attached to mother nature and classic ways of his ancestors. The way of his persons is the protagonist’s way as well as the white man’s value program – the “civilization” – is the villain. After living for some time between whites and studying within a college, he is disillusioned with what he discovered. He loathes the “civilization” white men tried to teach him. After explaining just how his people appreciate such values as sharing and loving the type, the narrator critiques thinking about “civilization” through sarcasm. “Being civilized means, ” he says, “living in houses without knowing or perhaps caring that is next door. inch It also means being greedy, “always dissatisfied – getting a hill and wanting a mountain…. Progress would stop if this individual did not want these things. inch The narrator again uses sarcasm if he says “Maybe I am just not smart enough to grasp these things that go to constitute civilization. Might be I was just as well lazy to believe hard enough maintain. ” Here he is getting a jab for claims that nonwhites will be lazy rather than intelligent enough to appreciate the values of white mans civilization.
2 . The narrator emphasizes that Native Americans are extremely attached to mother nature. It is a part of their community. They believe that the nature – animals, wind flow, snow, trees and shrubs, etc . – are like neighbors. Therefore , when he is near his residence and is actually alone, he says, “I am alone; only but not nearly so lonesome as I was back within the campus by school. inches On campus, he was unhappy because he neither felt the presence of others (because white guys lived with no basically being aware of each other mentally, he suggests) nor arsenic intoxication nature. The college was in Washington dc and it absolutely was hot right now there. But now, as he is close to Wisconsin, his home, he could be not that alone ever again because “[t]hose pipe are never lonely who like the snow as well as the pines; never lonely when ever pines will be wearing white-colored shawls and snow crunches coldly underfoot. In the forest I know there are tracks of deer and rabbit…. ” In other words, simply no human being is around him at this point but at least this individual feels arsenic intoxication nature, while at school he was completely depressed.
3. The narrator continually uses metaphorical and radical language to convey his deep feelings. This individual also uses the language of wisdom. One of these is his use of the phrase “blue winds grooving. ” The word “blue” figuratively refers to despair. But the narrator uses the phrase “blue winds dancing” in a framework where this suggests anybody can feel alleviation and happiness. He uses it together with his information of his people beating drums, the beauty of nature, and everyone being joyful. So , the narrator likely suggests that by simply connecting with nature, sense the presence of snow (which brands purity), vocal singing, and grooving, people relieve their interior sadness or perhaps whatever unfavorable feelings they may have. Then they feel happy. That is certainly probably what he means when he says that this individual wants to discover “blue winds dancing. inches He really wants to get rid of sadness and other adverse feelings when you are in his community, dancing, vocal singing, and hooking up with the character.
