A tragic hero is usually defined somebody who possesses heroic traits, but also have a tragic flaw that eventually causes their own drop. In the book, Things Break apart, Achebe portrays his individual characterization on this tragic catch through Okonkwo, the main character. Like any typical character having a tragic flaw in other crafted works, he suffers a tragic death at the end. Irrespective of his professional and respected role in the tribe, Okonkwo’s tragic catch, fear of failing, weakness, fantastic uncontrollable anger eventually causes his individual doom.

Okonkwo’s first leading drawback is his fear of failing, which is kindled by his father, Unoka, who was a lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow (pg. 4). He previously a trustworthiness of being poor and in debt to additional members of Umuofia, which triggered Okonkwo’s “whole your life [to be] dominated by fear, the fear of inability and of weakness” (pg. 13). Ashamed of his father, this individual wanted to vary and the contrary of his father. Okonkwo was ruled by 1 passion- to hate exactly what his father Unoka experienced loved (pg. 13). He was afraid of being believed weak (pg. 61). Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna demonstrates his fear of staying seen as poor and that his reputation is far more valuable than the life of his followed son.

Another tragic flaw is definitely Okonkwo’s impulsive anger that prevents him from obtaining his desired goals, which finally caused his own death. His incapability to control his fury triggered him to exhibit it through his violent and reasonless behavior. This particular behavior is demonstrated when Okonkwo killed a messenger from the missionaries. “Okonkwo’s matchet descended twice as well as the man’s mind lay alongside his uniformed body” (pg. 204). If the villagers reinforced away in fear and questioned the other person, “Why did he take action? “, this individual realizes that not one of them support him and that he aren’t save his village through the missionaries (pg. 205). This flaw of overconfidence leads him to commit suicide, a heinous death like his father’s, as a result of the defeat.

In conclusion, Okonkwo’s suicide at the end of the new is the result of the life of any tragic hero. His fear of failure, weakness, and his anger leads him to his own devastation that can not be reversed. Irrespective of his substantial status inside the village, he fails to right his tragic flaw and ultimately suffers a tragic fortune.
