“Survival is Insufficient”
Upon first thought, I, an incoming junior from Memphis, Tennessee, include nothing in common with Kirsten Raymonde, the protagonist of Emily St . John Mandel’s Station Eleven. Kirsten Raymonde perseveres while her community crumbles about her thanks to the Georgia Flu, she wrist watches worldly issues, such as fame, money, and luxury, turn into obsolete and replaced by necessity to survive. But a life based upon survival only is missing. This desire for more is the reason why, in Station Eleven, the Traveling Symphony forms. Within a world identified by damage, Kirsten plus the other members of the Journeying Symphony help remind people that there exists beauty and richness in life when you target thriving instead of surviving. This kind of lesson, however , does not end with the survivors in Place Eleven, living through at the College or university of Tennessee is insufficient. I want to grow and be successful.
Soon enough, my life will probably be drastically several as I move from Memphis, Tennessee, my own home for earlier times eighteen years, to Knoxville, Tennessee. I will leave my parents’ residence for a dorm room to live with someone who is not family members. I will change homecooked dishes for cusine hall food, and I can transition from a small private school to a large public college or university. Admittedly beginning college is definitely far less life-altering than living through a outbreak, but the slogan “Survival is Insufficient” even now stands. I am able to easily make it through my freshman year. I am older enough to wake up, consume, go to course, exercise, research, and sleeping without mother and father telling how to proceed and when to accomplish, but I might not be truly living if my life were identified by these events. In the event that anything, I’d be a “high-functioning sleepwalker” (St. John Mandel 163) because Dahlia in Station Eleven might say. I want to have the ability to reflect on college and remember some thing more meaningful than just my own classes ” I want to think about genuine interactions, spontaneous journeys, stimulating conversations, and educating mistakes. The Traveling Symphony exists to remind the survivors that art enriches life past survival exclusively, and as We transition to our lives as a college student, I will prioritize the opportunities that change the University of Tn from a college to a home. First off, I completed Stir up Outdoors, I selected to participate in Ignite Outside the house because of I enjoy hiking, camping, and paddle boarding and figured that it’d be a unique approach to meet likeminded people. I actually arrived knowing no one and insecure within my outdoors capabilities, just like Kirsten, I was by itself and anxious, but that quickly pale. I camped, hiked, and spoke to my crew for hours, all of us survived jointly, and as Fire up continued, all of us progressed coming from strangers to friends. Stir up is exceptional to me because it gave me a bunch friends who enriched my personal experience like a UT scholar before also my initially day of class. Ignite was your first of many steps of immersing personally into LACE, and I firsthand know the rewards. I devoted time and energy to engaging and Ignite, and in return, I received memories, friends, experience, and confidence to increase involve personally in UT and the outdoors program. Once I get there on grounds, there will be brand new ways to entail myself: Traditional life, night clubs, classes, college student ministries, offer work, and more. These chances, if I entail and apply myself, will be what boosts my LACE experience beyond daylight hours point of survival alone. I will include a purpose and a place for a University or college that 20+, 000 people call home, rather than everyone can admit. Though my situation is very different from Kirsten Raymonde’s in Station 9, if I adhere to her case in point by being fearless, open, and purposeful and refusing to be in for survival, I will do more than scrape by simply at the University of Tn. I will thrive.
