The Past

In Kurt Vonneguts book, Slaughterhouse Five, the character, Billy Pilgrim offers experiences in his past that affects his present. In the past, Billy Pilgrim skilled horrific occasions of warfare, such as the Bombing of Dresden, which experienced caused many deaths. Billy’s past situations affected him psychologically and causes him in our to have a disturbed mental state. His relationship towards the past shows how war can continue to cause suffering for a person even if the enduring of being immediately in the conflict is over.

Billy Pilgrim’s past inside the war damaged him psychologically in the present. After returning coming from war, Billy Pilgrim feels that he was abducted by simply aliens with their planet Tralfamadore. He begins to believe in the Tralfamadorians’ idea of the fourth dimensions, that “all moments, previous, present and future, also have existed, often will exist” (16). This is certainly Billy’s way of escaping truth by refusing to accept the horrific truth of battle and fatalities.
