In works of great literature, violent views often play prominent functions. The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, is no exception to this statement. Through the entire story there are numerous violent scenes, and all of all of them add meaning and effectiveness to Zusaks writing. With this story especially, the chaotic acts display how a terrible, Nazi, fascist society responds to the functions of human being kindness, in addition they show the power of words and, lastly, demonstrate how survivors of tragedies handle their very own guilt. The violent scenes in The Book Thief help to display the themes of human kindness, the power of words, and survivors remorse.

One of these of a violent scene inside the story comes up during the first-time the Nazis parade a line of Jews down Munich Street. “Their eyes were enormous inside their starving skulls. And the dirt and grime. The dirt and grime was shaped to all of them. Their thighs staggered as they were pushed by soldiers’ hands” (Zusak, 391-92). The parade of these human beings, staying treated like animals, is certainly a scene of unimaginable assault. However due to this violence, Hans Hubermann’s thoughts about the Nazis will be shown through his nurturing actions. “The Jew was before him, expecting one more handful of derision, but he watched with everyone else since Hans Hubermann held his hand out and presented him with a piece of bread, just like magic” (Zusak, 394). If he gives among the Jews an item of bread, his compassion and care for humans, regardless of all their ethnic or perhaps religious history is exhibited. From this picture of assault, the motif that actually in the darkest of times, human being compassion for just one another continue to exists is shown.

Another sort of how a scene of violence affected this is of the history is the death of Liesel’s brother around the train at the start of the history. “Liesel Meminger-could see without question that her little buddy, Werner, was now side by side and deceased. His green eyes stared at the floors. Seeing nothing” (Zusak, 20). Although the fatality of her brother is known as a quick field of assault, as he died coughing over a train, that sets off a chain of events that gained Liesel’s life and influences the meaning in the story. As Werner died, Liesel were required to stop ahead of she found her create home to bury him. It is with this stop that she picks up The Burial plot Digger’s Handbook and burglarizes her initial book. This book later becomes the glue that binds Liesel and Hans collectively, and helps Liesel to learn more plus more about catalogs, and words and phrases. She then simply realizes the energy that words have and the damage they will do. “The words. For what reason did they should exist? Without words, the Führer was nothing. There is no limping prisoner, no need for consolation or perhaps worldly techniques to make us feel better” (Zusak, 521). All of these incidents, that started out with the chaotic death of Werner, contributed to the books theme of the strength of language.

Yet another chaotic scene comes when Michael Holtzapfel survives the Challenge of Stalingrad, but his brother Robert dies. Eileen is so packed with guilt that he made it that he takes his own existence. “Michael Holtzapfel knew what he was undertaking. He murdered himself pertaining to wanting to live” (Zusak, 503). This violent act of somebody taking their particular life lights light for the theme of desertion and survivors guilt inside the story. This theme, which can be introduced previous in the book, when Liesels mom abandons her and Liesel goes to are in the foster home. This theme is also apparent in Hans’ account of when he was portion in World War I. The storyline was that, Erik Vandenberg salvaged his life by helping out him for the written task, while the remaining regiment was sent in to battle and all of them died. “He published the characters as best he could even though the rest of the men went into battle. Probably none of these came back” (Zusak, 178). The assault of the first World War, which took Erik Vandenberg, gave Hans survivors guilt and this triggers Hans to take Max in. Some violent scenes contribute to the theme of survivors guilt, which usually dramatically changes the plot and meaning of the history.

Over the course of The Book Thief, many chaotic events happened. However , these violent events had an root purpose, as they contributed to the countless themes with the story. While the Jews are being mercilessly paraded through Munich street, the theme of man compassion is definitely shown once Hans offers bread into a dying and starving Jew. From the death of Werner, Liesel’s sibling, the concept of the the power of phrases and books enters into the story. Finally, in the deaths of Erik Vandenberg and Robert Holtzapfel, the theme of survivors sense of guilt passes on to their friends and family and causes changes in the story.
